Chiharu Shiota – Invisible Line
About the exhibition
Invisible Line is a solo exhibition by Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota (b. 1972, Osaka, Japan), who lives and works in Berlin. Her installations have captivated audiences around the world. Invisible Line explores Shiota's interest in themes such as human mortality, memory and the many mysterious connections of life.
Chiharu Shiota is best known for his large, intricately woven wire installations as a metaphor for how our experiences are connected in a network of invisible lines. In the exhibition Invisible Line, five large-scale installations offer visitors the opportunity to immerse themselves in Shiota's distinctive universes.
Death is part of my work. I don't see it as an end, but rather as a new beginning.
Chiharu Shiota
Invisible Line focuses on Shiota's often humble, but always powerful drawings and paintings, so we can see how essential they are as works of art. Among them are several brand new works that reflect the artist's reflections on mortality, body and soul. The exhibition also includes Last Hope, one of Shiota's most beautiful installations. Last Hope is an all-encompassing wire installation created to arouse our wonder and nurture our hope. You can also experience one of her most direct and honest works - Light in the Darkness - which conveys Shiota's struggle with the pain, fear and grief experienced during the difficult ordeal of cancer.
