ARoS acquires a work by Anri Sala

From Friday 3 July, visitors to ARoS will be able to experience the captivating sound and video installation *Take Over* (2017) by the Albanian artist Anri Sala. The work forms part of the exhibition *Mythologies – The Beginning and End of Civilisations* and, thanks to generous support from the Augustinus Foundation, has been acquired for the ARoS collection, meaning it will take up a permanent place in the museum’s installation gallery on Level 0.

- We are delighted to have acquired the work for our permanent collection. The installation gallery has been undergoing a transformation in recent years, and with *Take Over* we are moving even closer to our ambition of transforming the gallery into a more immersive space, where sound, light, imagination and memory are all set in motion as you move from room to room,” says Senior Curator Lise Pennington, ARoS.

About the artist and the work

Anri Sala (b. 1974) was born and brought up under the communist regime in Albania. Among other things, he studied at the Albanian Academy of Arts from 1992 to 1996. As an artist, he generally works with video and music, and he often uses music as a central element in his works. He is currently based in Berlin.

For Sala, music is imbued with layers of cultural meaning that change over time and in different contexts. He believes that music appeals more broadly and on more levels than words, both emotionally and in terms of content, and the approximately eight-minute-long work *Take Over* is an example of this.

Here, Sala highlights the connection between the two national anthems, *La Marseillaise* and *L’Internationale*, and, amongst other things, questions the relationship between society and the individual. The piece consists of a blend of piano and electronic music. A freestanding glass wall divides the gallery in two, with projections appearing on both sides of it.
