Snapshots from Slumberland - 3 x Krull
About the exhibition
In the summer and autumn of 2011, ARoS' West Gallery was occupied by Maria Struzik-Krull (1951-2005), Hans Oldau Krull (1952-) and Carl Krull (1975-): Mother, father and son. With the exhibition SNAPSHOTS FROM SLUMBERLAND - 3 X KRULL, ARoS visitors were treated to an unusual experience of three very different artistic expressions created in a family relationship. Despite artistic differences, this exhibition showed how the family members' art, each in their own way, struck the viewer with the special atmosphere we recognise from the stage between sleep and wakefulness.
The artworks on display sucked the viewer into a vacuum of momentary fascination, where reality and dream were indistinguishable, and where the sense of alienation held, fascinated and frightened.
Maria Struzik-Krull
The exhibition featured graphic works by Maria Struzik-Krull. Her work reflects the enchantment of a fabulous and adventurous universe with an edge of surrealism.
Hans Oldau Krull
Powerful, colourful paintings challenge the boundary between reality and dream. These paintings were accompanied by dancing figures in shadow play and exciting tableaux.
Carl Krull
Carl Krull works primarily with large-format drawings. He deals with the fluid boundaries of motifs that endlessly replace each other in playful and whimsical shifts. The boundaries of each motif are explored to the limit, only to be exploded and transformed into surprising new motifs. They are in a constant process of change, as if in a state between dissolution and creation, being and not being.
