Objects of Wonder – from Pedestal to Interaction
About the exhibition
Objects of Wonder - from Pedestal to Interaction is a major international sculpture exhibition featuring works from 1960 to the present day. The exhibition has been created in close collaboration with Tate, London, and it is the first time in ARoS' history that the museum presents a sculpture exhibition of this calibre.
The exhibition showcases the recent history of sculpture. These are sensory and thought-provoking artworks by Anish Kapoor, Damien Hirst, Anthony Caro, Sarah Lucas and Ai Wei Wei, among others. On the one hand, the audience will encounter a series of form experiments where tactile, spatial and light play a central role. On the other hand, the audience will experience sculptures where the play with the distorted body or the inclusion of the everyday object challenges the understanding of what a sculpture can be. In other words, these are not sculptures in the classical sense.
From the 1960s, there were significant breakthroughs in sculpture as an artistic format. The artists of this period had the legacy of Marcel Duchamp and the found objects of the Surrealists on the one hand, while on the other hand, there was Minimalism and landscape art's designation and staging of the viewer's body, space and place.
ARoS is known for its collection of installation works where the audience is spatially enveloped by the works and moves through them. In Objects of Wonder - From Pedestal to Interaction, ARoS wants to show the connection to the museum's collection by reviewing highlights from the vital history of sculpture over the past 60 years, running parallel to developments in installation art.
Exhibition is made in collaboration with Tate Gallery, UK
