No Man is an Island - The Satanic Verses
About the exhibition
Boy in a cramped space, Bjørn Nørgaard's The Horse Sacrifice in a new staging and a Lamborghini that needs scratching. A new group exhibition at ARoS focuses on our contemporary world and challenges our thoughts about Europe.
The exhibition No Man is an Island - The Satanic Verses presents works from ARoS' collection and loans of significant deposited works. The exhibition presents carefully selected installations by a number of international artists. No Man is an Island - The Satanic Verses can be seen as a follow-up to Out Of The Darkness, which was museum director Erlend G. Høyersten's first staging of works from the museum's collection.
Among other things, the exhibition focuses on people's right to think differently, on a Europe in motion and on the challenges we are experiencing in relation to our view of humanity and values - as individuals and groups. The title of the exhibition refers to these topics and also points to literature and Salman Rushdie's The Satanic Verses, which has become a symbol of the clash between free thought and orthodoxy.
The gallery and the artists
The scenography in the gallery is toned down, allowing each work to unfold and interact with the other works. The exhibition includes works by Ron Mueck, Tony Matelli, Bjørn Nørgaard, Andy Warhol, Shirin Neshat, Edward Kienholz, Rose Eken and selected young artists who have exhibited in the ARoS FOCUS//NEW NORDIC series over the past two years.
