Music to see - Musikvideoen som kunstart
About the exhibition
The exhibition showcased five of today's most visually innovative and experimental image makers in the music video genre. The five video artists all worked at the intersection of visual art and the visual expression of film, where the music video becomes art. Each in their own way, they used a visual language that has many references to and similarities with both visual art and film when challenging and rethinking the traditional visual space.
Despite the commercial interests associated with the existence of the music video, music video is a field with room for experimentation. This is why the launch of MTV-Europe in 1981 has had an enormous impact on the development of the medium. On the other hand, the music video has also had an enormous influence on the visual arts, especially the visual arts that work with video and film.
The five music video directors in the exhibition are shining examples of the interplay between film, music video and visual art. It is precisely this field, where the boundaries are fluid as to when the music video is promoting music and when it is art, that is the focal point when ARoS shows how new music generates new images.
