About the exhibition
In February 2010, 500,000 guests had already visited Frederik VIII's Palace at Amalienborg to experience the future home of Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary. The many visitors were given an insight into the unique artistic decoration of the newly restored Frederik VIII's Palace. The Crown Prince Couple were handed the keys to their new home at the end of September, and the mansion is now once again the couple's private residence and workplace. It was therefore with great pleasure that ARoS had the opportunity to present the public with the exhibition "Art for the Royals - about the decoration of the Crown Prince Couple's Amalienborg" in 2010.
With the exhibition "Art for the Royals - about the decoration of the Crown Prince Couple's Amalienborg", ARoS recreated the series of spatial sequences at the Royal Palace. Using sound, light and large colour wallpapers of the palace interiors with the finished artworks, ARoS' guests gained insight into the many artistic styles, narratives and personal sources of inspiration that the ten participating artists had each worked with. As a number of the works were created with direct reference to the Crown Prince Couple's own life and everyday life, the exhibition "Art for the Royals - about the decoration of the Crown Prince Couple's Amalienborg" was a unique insight into a young, modern royal family at the same time as the exhibition unfolded ten artistic talents' idioms.
In connection with the exhibition, ARoS Aarhus Art Museum published an illustrated catalogue with interviews with the participating artists. The catalogue could be purchased in the ARoS Shop for DKK 30,- The catalogue was created and edited by KØS.
Restoration of Amalienborg
After a year-long restoration process, Frederik VIII's Palace was ready to be inhabited again - renovated in accordance with the centuries-old Rococo and Late Empire architecture. However, not everything looks the same. The Crown Prince Couple asked ten of Denmark's most important contemporary artists to create a work of art for each room in the palace. The result was an inspiring encounter between classical architecture and innovative contemporary art.
