About the exhibition

Over the past decade, Danish video artist Jesper Just (born 1974) has gained international recognition for his short filmic works that tell stories about human relationships and emotions with technical precision and beauty.

In May 2014, Just will open its largest museum exhibition to date at ARoS, where both early and recent video works will be shown in a unique staging that extends over a 1300 m2 exhibition space.

Hollywood revisited

Since graduating from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 2003, Just has created a series of fascinating video works. In his use of the film medium, Just plays on the idiom, aesthetics and visual codes of Hollywood cinema, but disputes and distorts the clichés. Unlike the easy-to-understand plots of commercial cinema, Just's films often lack morals and explanations.

Place as protagonist

For Just, the place where the action unfolds plays a crucial role. Whether it's the harbour quay, the car park or the motorway junction, the physical environment reinforces the characters' emotions. This is especially true in Just's latest video work, the five-screen total installation Intercourses created for the Danish pavilion at the 55. Venice Biennale in 2013.

Danish premiere

In Just's special exhibition at ARoS, you can experience the Danish premiere of the Venice project Intercourses. The action takes place in a suburb of the Chinese city of Hangzhou, which is an architectural replica on a scale of 1:1 of the French capital, Paris. In a poetic cinematic language, Just stages themes of cultural belonging, globalisation and the supermodern city.

The exhibition JESPER JUST - APPEARING / INTERCOURSES visualises how Just has developed his enigmatic imagery over the past decade and added new dimensions to the art film genre
