About the exhibition

Desire. Romance. Power. Sex. Pain. Passion. Hate. All emotions were in play when 39 international artists in a unique staging put the spotlight on the most powerful emotion a human being can experience: love.

For the first time ever, a Danish art museum unfolded the concept of love in all its nuances. 39 international artists, including Jeff Koons, Damien Hirst, Louise Bourgeois, Pablo Picasso, Auguste Rodin, Nan Goldin, Barbara Kruger, Pipilotti Rist and Rebecca Horn contributed to an exhibition staged with almost three kilometres of Kvadrat textiles as a powerful sensory and aesthetic journey into the world of love.

Love

The theme of love has always fascinated artists. Whereas the study of romance and eroticism used to take place in secret, since the mid-20th century, art has freely nuanced the facets of relationships and put the concept of love up for discussion.

The exhibition 'I Love You' explored all aspects of love in relationships, interpreted by a range of international artists from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries in video, sculpture, installation art, photography and painting.

accompanied by art, 'I Love You' was a journey into the world of love, for better or worse. The exhibition raised a topical discussion about relationships and human connection, emphasising love and togetherness as the universality of human existence with all the challenges that follow in the wake of relationships.

Unique staging

In an exclusive collaboration with textile company Kvadrat, Europe's leading manufacturer of modern and innovative textiles, ARoS created a spectacular staging of the exhibition 'I Love You'. The architectural unity of the many sensuous spaces and nooks and crannies in the exhibition was created by the recognised Danish architect Dorte Mandrup.

With the many nuances of the concept of love in mind, she used Kvadrat's textiles and ARoS' beautiful architectural expression to create the framework for the highly sensual and aesthetic journey of love that 'I Love You' took ARoS' guests on. The exhibition was an innovative total experience where art, architecture and staging merged to create a sensuous starting point for all perspectives on love.

The exhibition was curated by Pernille Taagaard Dinesen.
