Elisabeth Jerichau-Baumann – Between Worlds
About the exhibition
From May, ARoS presents a comprehensive exhibition of the Polish-Danish artist Elisabeth Jerichau-Baumann (1818-1881).
Jerichau-Baumann represents one of the unfortunately all too few female artists of the 19th century. She was born in Poland and trained at the art academy in Düsseldorf, which made her horizon broader than most of her contemporary Danish artist colleagues. She belonged to the group of Danish artists known as the 'Europeans', who stood in contrast to the 'national' artists. The Europeans were often overtly inspired by international currents, and Jerichau-Baumann's oscillation between the global and the national makes her an extremely interesting voice and a counterpoint to the national orientation and art school of the period.
Parts of the exhibition are based on research by Sine Krogh, MA, PhD Fellow, Art History, Aarhus University.
