A K Dolven - moving mountain
About the exhibition
The exhibition moving mountain presents a series of new films and paintings by Norwegian artist Anne Katrine Dolven (b. 1953).
The aesthetic expression of the works is unmistakably Nordic. Dolven's romantic depictions of nature are based on the magnificent Norwegian countryside, where the magical light and quiet contemplation are expressed. Her artistic work ranges from the minimal, subdued and understated to the alluring and dramatic.
The fascination with time as a progressive movement or as a suspended timelessness is a recurring element in Dolven's works. Time is maintained as a sliding movement without a clear culmination. She thus creates a void or time capsule in which eternity and infinity reign.
The sublime experience of nature is characterised by beauty on the one hand, but also by fear and unease on the other. It is never an unproblematic, undisturbed encounter. We are confronted with a soundtrack - partly in the form of screaming seabirds, partly the mechanical noise of the 35 mm projector - that breaks the silence of the visual image. Dolven thus establishes a series of polarities: open/closed, light/dark, silence/noise, paradise/hell.
The exhibition invites contemplation and meditative calm as an essential alternative to the hectic and busy everyday life outside the museum walls. The works do not leave us untouched. Dolven's sensory seductive works leave us with both an assurance of the greatness of life and nature, but also a disturbing reminder of the transience and end of time.
