Storm Room is back

Back in 2014/15, ARoS presented the exhibition “Something Strange This Way”, featuring works by the Canadian artist couple Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller. Among the many spectacular installations in the exhibition was the work ‘Storm Room’, which has now returned to ARoS.

Both the exhibition “Something Strange This Way” and the work “Storm Room” were met with great enthusiasm back in 2014. It is therefore with great pleasure that, thanks to a donation from the Augustinus Foundation, we have succeeded in acquiring this work by the internationally renowned artist couple for the ARoS collection:

- It has long been a great wish of ARoS to acquire “Storm Room”. Cardiff and Miller are major stars on the international art scene, and we are proud to add this particular work to the museum’s collection of installation art. As a total installation, ‘Storm Room’ is a solid addition to our already strong collection of installation art on the ground floor, featuring works that appeal to senses other than just sight,’ says Lise Pennington, Chief Curator at ARoS.

About the work

The installation “Storm Room” is a faithful replica of a dilapidated and abandoned dentist’s surgery in Japan. From the outside, the work resembles a large wooden box, but once inside, over the course of the ten minutes the work lasts, you experience a raging storm with rain, lightning and thunder. At first, the rain falls gently, but then the storm sets in. A bolt of lightning strikes and there is a loud crash. When the storm finally subsides and the rain slowly stops, you can hear someone rummaging about in the room next door. With this work, the artists seek to turn our perception of what is reality and what is fiction on its head.
