Record number of visitors at ARoS

Visitors flocked to ARoS in July, which became the busiest month in the museum’s history.

So far, 2020 has been a difficult year due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. ARoS was closed for 69 days and experienced low visitor numbers following its reopening. It is therefore with great pleasure and satisfaction that ARoS can report that July was the busiest month in the museum’s history, with 126,039 tickets sold.

‘We are very proud of the high visitor numbers, which demonstrate that ARoS is an attractive place to visit for both Danes and tourists. Today we are celebrating this record and will then continue our hard work so that we can facilitate even more great art experiences for the rest of the summer and autumn,’ says Erlend G. Høyersten, Director of ARoS.

The high visitor numbers have required a great deal of focus and daily assessment to ensure a positive and safe museum experience in line with the authorities’ guidelines for limiting the spread of infection.

Høyersten.

Several reasons for the great success

Following the museum’s reopening, ARoS opened its doors to the major exhibition ‘Mythologies – the Beginning and End of Civilisations’, which spans two of the museum’s galleries. In addition, the reduced admission price, the large number of Danes holidaying in Denmark and the rainy weather have also been factors contributing to the record-high visitor numbers.

Following a long closure of the museum and a quiet restart with low visitor numbers, this summer’s high visitor numbers are a cause for celebration, but they do not lift the museum out of the shadow of the pandemic.

- More visitors to the museum mean higher revenue from admission fees, our café and the ARoS Shop. The popularity in July means we are more optimistic about ARoS’s finances than we were in June. However, we have not made up for the losses, and we are still facing a very uncertain autumn, says Erlend G. Høyersten.

The last time ARoS set a record for the most visitors in a single month was in February 2014, when 80,786 visitors purchased tickets to the museum.
