Major donations to ARoS

Thanks to generous support from, amongst others, the New Carlsberg Foundation and the Augustinus Foundation, ARoS’s art collection has been raised to a new level over the past year.

Despite the museum being closed for many months in 2020 and 2021, ARoS has acquired a wide range of works, several of which can already be seen in the museum’s galleries, whilst others will feature in exhibitions later this year. However, these acquisitions would not have been possible without the tremendous support shown by the foundations during a difficult time.

- We are very grateful for the donations we have received over the past year. We have a strong and close working relationship with the foundations, and during the lockdown we have devoted extra time to these collaborations. It has been fruitful, and it is lovely to feel the support for the museum,’ says Acting Director Lise Pennington, ARoS.

Among the many spectacular new acquisitions is Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller’s *Storm Room*, an immersive and highly sensory installation in which visitors step into a recreation of a Japanese dental surgery during a violent storm. The work can already be viewed in ARoS’s installation gallery, as can the impressive musical video and sound installation *Take Over* by Anri Sala. Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster’s ethereal Marilyn Monroe film work *Cinema*, Jacob Kirkegaard’s poignant video and sound work and photo series *Membranes* about Trump’s wall with Mexico, and Joachim Koester’s performative video installation in a wooden house, *The Place of Dead Roads*, can all be experienced in the exhibition *Far From Home*. This autumn, visitors can see Sif Itona Westerberg’s aerated concrete reliefs in a solo exhibition at ARoS. The list of donations also includes works by, amongst others, Nina Beier, Eva Kock and Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen.

- These new acquisitions represent a huge boost to the quality of ARoS’s art collection. We are dealing with some significant artists – both nationally and internationally. Some of the works are technically demanding installations of which we are very proud. The support of major foundations such as the Ny Carlsberg Foundation and the Augustinus Foundation is crucial to ensuring that we can continue to acquire works of this calibre,’ says Lise Pennington.
