Jonah Freeman & Justin Lowe – COLONY SOUND

The American artist duo Freeman & Lowe are currently exhibiting at ARoS with a large-scale exhibition, both in terms of set design and content. COLONY SOUND is a unique and sensory total experience that takes you through a universe where reality is not what it seems.

From 10 October, visitors to ARoS can wander through 15 immersive spaces featuring changing scenographic installations. Taken as a whole, these spaces form the special exhibition COLONY SOUND by the New York-based artist duo Jonah Freeman & Justin Lowe.

- COLONY SOUND is an engaging and relevant art experience that will capture the interest of both children and adults. The exhibition explores some of the potential disasters and dystopias that preoccupy our contemporary world, and therefore speaks directly to the very current spirit of the times, says museum director Erlend G. Høyersten, ARoS.

Comprising thousands of elements, COLONY SOUND forms a gigantic, labyrinthine total installation, where visitors must explore for themselves and assess what is fiction and what is fact.

- Freeman & Lowe work with this holistic approach, physically incorporating everything from the ceiling to the walls and floors into their installations. The public will experience a very special sensation of being in a space that is a blend of an architectural ruin and a simulated theatrical world, says Lise Pennington, Senior Curator and Head of Exhibitions at ARoS.

San San

COLONY SOUND is the artist duo’s latest addition to their fictional narrative about the city of San San. Freeman & Lowe have drawn their inspiration from the book *The Year 2000*, in which the authors Herman Kahn and Anthony J. Wiener, in 1967, gazed into the crystal ball and offered their vision of the world in the year 2000. In the book, the authors imagine that the cities along the US west coast, from San Diego to San Francisco, will merge to form a single, gigantic urban complex called San San.

About the artists

Freeman & Lowe’s artistic practice consists of architectural scenarios as well as carefully selected artefacts, prints and films. Since 2008, their explorations of architecture as sculpture and total installation have taken the form of reinterpretations of dystopian visions, psychotic episodes and drug-related subcultures. Their collaborative practice has led to solo exhibitions at Art Basel and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, California, as well as participation in numerous group exhibitions worldwide.
