Experience the autumn break at ARoS in all the colours of the rainbow
During the autumn break from 10–18 October, children and families can dance in James Turrell’s new Skyspace As Seen Below, go on an art hunt with the museum’s new art guides, carry out creative experiments and take part in special guided tours for families with children.
“We look forward to inviting children and families to explore the wondrous world of colour during the autumn break. In our new Skyspace As Seen Below, the whole family can experience how light and colour change around us, and throughout the rest of the museum we have created a programme where our youngest visitors can engage with art through play, imagination and creativity. We hope that both children and adults will realise that ARoS is a place for the whole family,” says Museum Director Rebecca Matthews.
Go on an art hunt
Grab an Art Kit and take your children for an art hunt with the Rainbow Friends. They’re hiding all around the museum, and they need your help to solve puzzles.
Afterwards, you can turn your experiences into creative experiments in the Colour Workshop.
Dance the day away in As Seen Below
Every day, the programme also features dancing in ARoS’s new Skyspace, As Seen Below, where you can take on headphones and dance your way through our new, large-scale artwork and experience light, music and movement blend together.
Art for children
Our youngest visitors can explore Mini ARoS; a sensory and fun play area created for children aged 2–6.
Every day at 10.30 am, there will be special guided tours for children and families, where you can explore the art at ARoS together with our education assistants. The tours proceed at a leisurely pace so that everyone can join in, and there’s plenty of room for curiosity, questions and wonder along the way.

Meet Boy’s grandparents
During the autumn break, you can also experience German masterpieces from the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin by artists such as Emil Nolde, Paul Klee, Käthe Kollwitz and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner in the exhibition Freedom’s Fall – Art in Germany 1910–1945.
In the exhibition Collection Favourites, you can meet Boy’s grandparents, the sculpture Couple Under an Umbrella (2013), created by the Australian artist Ron Mueck, who is known for his extremely lifelike sculptures.
ARoS’s new holiday concept
The autumn break marks the start of ARoS’s brand-new holiday universe for families with children: Holidays in Colours. It will be a regular feature of ARoS’s holiday programme over the coming year, a place that will make children want to come back again and again. The concept encourages curiosity, play and artistic experiences on the children’s own terms.
The Children’s Cultural Centre in Aarhus is also part of Holidays in Colours, so children with a leisure pass and their parents can visit ARoS for free. A partnership is also launched with local after-school clubs, offering specially organised art experiences for children attending these clubs during the holidays.
Practical information
ARoS’s autumn activities are open to everyone from Saturday 10 October to Sunday 18 October, 09:00–16:00 and are free with an annual pass or upon payment of the museum admission fee. Admission to the museum is always free for everyone under the age of 18.
At ARoS Café on Level 4, you can buy child-friendly food and drinks such as fish cakes, pizza rolls, fruit, vegetables and sausage rolls.
