ARoS’s Annual Report 2020

The year 2020 was the most challenging and unpredictable year in the museum’s history to date. The lockdown due to Covid-19 highlighted just how vulnerable cultural institutions such as ARoS, which rely heavily on self-funding, really are. Thanks to government support packages and invaluable backing from the Salling Foundations and Aarhus City Council, ARoS has managed to end the year with a break-even result.

Carsten Fode, Chair of the Board, said:

“Both the management and every individual member of staff have made a tremendous effort during a difficult period. A break-even result is very satisfactory and of great significance for the museum, which can now continue its positive development, including the expansion project ‘The Next Level’. A record number of visitors in July also underlines that the museum remains extremely popular.”

Museum Director Erlend G. Høyersten says:

“Our ambitions for 2020 were very high, and despite the obstacles posed by the pandemic, we are proud of the exhibitions, projects and dreams that we have nevertheless seen through to completion. Against all odds, we have maintained a high level of activity, and, not least, we have played an active role in the public debate. We are grateful for the support and backing the museum has received from the special aid package provided by the Salling Foundations and Aarhus Municipality, which demonstrates the importance of culture to Aarhus.”
