Aarhus Art Prize 2023

The Aarhus Art Prize celebrates emerging art in Aarhus. With two prizes, initiated by Kunsthal Aarhus, Godsbanen, Aarhus Billedkunstcenter, Jyllands-Posten and ARoS, the scheme supports talented artists who make a significant contribution to the city’s art scene. The Aarhus Art Prize supports the emerging generation and the artistic ecosystem in Aarhus with a view to attracting and retaining artistic talent and strengthening Aarhus as a vibrant cultural city.

The first prize is the Talent Prize. It is awarded to a graduating student from the Jutland Academy of Fine Arts in 2023 whose final project has distinguished itself to a particular degree. The prize is awarded for a work exhibited at that year’s final-year exhibition and consists of a sum of 30,000 kroner, as well as an invitation to give an artist talk at Kunsthal Aarhus, open to all.

The second prize is the Solo Prize. It is awarded to a former graduate of one of the Danish academies (or an equivalent academy) who, no later than five years after graduation, has made a significant mark on Aarhus through their relatively recent work. The prize consists of a career development programme which, in addition to a sum of 30,000 kroner, offers the artist various opportunities to work towards an exhibition in – or in the vicinity of – Jyllands-Posten’s new premises in Aarhus’s Sydhavnskvarter.

The Aarhus Art Prize has been awarded since 2018 by Kunsthal Aarhus, ARoS and Godsbanen. From 2023, the prize has been expanded to comprise the two awards described above. Jyllands-Posten and Aarhus Billedkunstcenter are now also backing the prize. The prize winners are selected by a jury comprising Diana Baldon (Artistic Director, Kunsthal Aarhus), Kirstine Højmose (Director, Aarhus Centre for Visual Arts), Pernille Taagaard Dinesen (Head of Public Engagement, ARoS), Signe Cecilie Nørgaard Jochumsen (Head of Exhibitions, JP/Politikens Hus), Marianne Grymer Bargeman (Director, Godsbanen) and Karin Salling (Vice-Chair, Salling Foundations). In addition, an external jury member is invited each year; in 2023, this will be Maria Kjær Themsen (freelance curator and critic, Information).
