About the exhibition

With his raw forms, bold brushstrokes and powerful sculptures, Svend Wiig Hansen (1922–1997) placed the human figure at the centre of his work – fragile, solitary and marked by the existential anxiety of the post-war era. For more than 50 years, Wiig Hansen has sought to depict the innermost core of our existence through painting, sculpture, drawing, and film.

This solo exhibition, Svend Wiig Hansen – Walking, falling, standing, showcases works from across Wiig Hansen's career. From the scandal surrounding the Mother Earth sculpture in Aarhus to the realization of the iconic landmark Man at Sea in Esbjerg, the exhibition explores why Wiig Hansen’s works continue to provoke both attention and emotion.

Wiig Hansen's art reflects the dark post-war period and also poses timeless questions about what it means to be human in a chaotic and ever-changing world.

The exhibition is curated by Jannie Haagemann.
