Søren Elgaard - Metropolis
About the exhibition
Aarhus-based painter Søren Elgaard's extensive solo exhibition in ARoS' Vestgalleriet is a tribute to the world's metropolises, experienced through a personal interpretive eye.
The pulse of the exhibition leads through a dense metropolitan universe, from the iconic water tanks of the New York skyline to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and the architect Sir Norman Foster's impressive dome on the Reichstag building in Berlin. In the images' motivic layers of photorealism and abstraction, the recognisable realistic universe is broken down into intense, meticulous suctions of colouristic details and reflections. Throughout Søren Elgaard's almost 40-year career, realism has been a constant painterly challenge. He often draws inspiration from the masters of detail in art history, from the Dutch painter Vermeer van Delft in the 17th century to the American photorealists of the 20th century. The exhibition will be realised in close collaboration with the artist and, in addition to existing works, will also present brand new works created especially for the exhibition.
