About the exhibition

In the 1980s and 90s, American artist Robert Rauschenberg experimented with new, immersive artworks that uniquely capture and express the connection between art and life, as he had intended since the very beginning in the 1950s.

In the last two decades, metal has become the preferred material and Rauschenberg's own travel photographs the preferred motif, transferred via increasingly advanced methods to copper, bronze, aluminium etc. This development has resulted in series such as Shiners, Urban Bourbons, Night Shades and Borealis as well as the three-dimensional project Gluts, which, inspired by a glut of oil in Texas, combines the scrap aesthetic with the smooth surfaces of pop art and pop culture references.
