About the exhibition
On 29 May, the new ARoS Aarhus Art Museum invited the public to the first major exhibition show in the museum's more than 1000 square metre special exhibition gallery.
The POP CLASSICS exhibition showcased key works from American Pop Art. The exhibition comprised a total of almost half a hundred artworks and presented all the big stars of pop art: in addition to luminaries such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, visitors were presented with striking masterpieces by Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Tom Wesselmann, James Rosenquist, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Indiana, Jim Dine, Edward Kienholz and many more.
POP CLASSICS included works from 1956 to 1975 with an emphasis on the heyday of pop art in the 1960s. The exhibition included painting, combines, graphics, sculpture and installation. The latter included major installations such as Robert Rauschenberg's Soundings (1968), James Rosenquist's Horse Blinders (1968-69) and Edward Kienholz's famous work The Portable War Memorial (1968), which had not been exhibited for several years.
