About the exhibition

The exhibition Form - Colour - Surface is an innovative staging of the artworks from ARoS' permanent collection, which are characterised by demonstrating visual art's fascination with the non-figurative. In a colourful bouquet of painting, sculpture and installation art, the exhibition focuses on forms, colours and surfaces.

Non-figurative art is perceived by many as an artistic style that closes in on itself by "not representing anything". What few people know is that the geometric shapes and bright colours were originally strongly grounded in reality. These works of art aimed to construct a new world after World War 2. World War II had bombed Europe into rubble. Art had social potential and was meant to revolutionise life by being the essential building block of a new and better existence for mankind.

Form - Colour - Surface draws on design culture by juxtaposing the exhibited works with various everyday objects. The exhibition conveys how non-figurative art has influenced the way people think, live and decorate today.
