ARoS presents unique live performance by Tori Wrånes for the opening of new exhibition The Cosmos Within

Norwegian artist Tori Wrånes (b. 1978) has created a live singing-performance especially for ARoS, which will be presented at the opening of the exhibition The Cosmos Within on December 1, 2023.

In her performance, Jord, Tori Wrånes will enter ARoS in the dark. Her improvised voice and shadowy figure from the lights outside are the only sign of her position. Through song and hymns Wrånes seeks to emphasize our conditions as earthly creatures on an immense planet.

Wrånes’s performance thematizes a feeling of human connectedness, the power of warmth and hope in a shared experience, and the value of being present without digital interference or disturbance.

In these days it feels necessary to keep it real and collective, so let's shut down the electricity and just share a moment and listen to the natural force of a single voice,” says Tori Wrånes about her performance.

About Tori Wrånes

Tori Wrånes is a Norwegian vocalist and artist and practices a transmedial artistic approach, which unfolds as performances, sculptures, videos, and installations. Her use of sounds, musical instruments, costumes, props, architecture, and sculptures distorts her appearance and creates new rituals and dreamlike constellations.

Wrånes draws us into enchanted parallel worlds populated by grotesque, animal-like or hybrid creatures, which simultaneously seduce and disturb our common and rational understanding of reality. This is also the case with Big Water (2022), a large video and sound installation that follows a small gathering of furry creatures on two coasts in Thailand and Norway and will be on view in The Cosmos Within.

Tori Wrånes’s performance will take place at ARoS, Level 4 at the opening of The Cosmos Within on December 1, 2023 after the opening speeches, approximately at 5.45 pm.

All lights in the museum will be switched off for approximately five minutes to ensure complete silence and darkness for Wrånes’s performance.

The Cosmos Within is on view at ARoS from the opening night to April 7, 2024 at Level 1.

The exhibition is co-curated by independent writer and art historian Jeppe Ugelvig, who together
with ARoS’ curator Maria Kappel Blegvad, has developed and realized the concept and content of the exhibition.

The exhibition is realized with generous support from the Obel Family Foundation, the Vilhelm Kiers Foundation, the S.C. Van Foundation, the Danish Arts Foundation, and Ege Carpets.
