Krøyer’s iconic Børsen vainting Visits ARoS

The monumental painting From the Copenhagen Stock Exchange (1895) by P.S. Krøyer will be on view at from 28 November as part of ARoS’ major collection rehang.

In the wake of the fire that struck the historic Børsen building in Copenhagen on 16 April 2024, one of Denmark's most significant cultural works is now embarking on an extraordinary journey across the country.

P. S. Krøyer's monumental painting From the Copenhagen Stock Exchange was rescued from the flames and will in 2026 be sent on an extensive national tour, organised by Dansk Erhverv in collaboration with Kunst På Arbejde and Hizkia.

The painting depicts Danish business life in 1895 and serves as a visual historical document, while also inviting reflection on how ideals and structures within Danish business and society have evolved over time.

The work arrives at ARoS in late November
The national tour begins at Kunstmuseum Brandts in Odense, where the painting will be exhibited from 27 February.

After its presentation in Odense, From the Copenhagen Stock Exchange will continue to ARoS. Here, it will form part of the rehang and reinterpretation of ARoS' own collection. From 28 November, visitors at ARoS will be able to experience Krøyer's work in a new, contextualised setting among the museum's other key pieces.

"We are very excited to borrow Krøyer's work and offer ARoS' visitors the chance to experience this iconic painting up close," says Museum Director Rebecca Matthews, adding:

"In connection with the rehang of the ARoS collection, we are working to create a dynamic exhibition architecture, where artworks and expressions can continuously shift in response to the changing world around us. It is a fantastic opportunity to incorporate Krøyer's work into this new approach."

The presentation at ARoS forms a central part of the tour's ambition to connect national cultural heritage with contemporary perspectives. After the exhibition period in Aarhus, the painting will continue on to Fuglsang Kunstmuseum.
