When James Turrell’s monumental work As Seen Below opens at midsummer, the occasion will be marked by a specially created sound work performed in the Skyspace at the first three sunsets on 19, 20, and 21 June.
“With the opening of As Seen Below, we are writing a new chapter in the history of ARoS. We want to celebrate this world premiere with an experience that matches both the scale and the vision of the work. That is why we have invited Kh Marie Studio to create a site-specific sound piece. James Turrell has been closely involved, and we look forward to this spectacular artistic experience during the opening weekend,” says Museum Director Rebecca Matthews.
A sound work in three acts
The sound work, Rite of Passage, consists of three acts, composed and assembled by Kh Marie Studio with input from James Turrell.
Act I: Separation presents the electronic piece Alphabet of Light by Italian composer Caterina Barbieri, which poetically accompanies the initial phase of the sunset.
Act II: Liminality is a newly written choral work composed for the occasion by Kh Marie Studio and performed by 12 singers from Ensemble Edge Choir.
Act III: Reintegration String Quartet No. 3 (Mishima) - Movement 2 by Philip Glass, String Quartet No. 3 (Mishima) - Movement 6 by Philip Glass © 1985 Dunvagen Music Publishers Inc. Used by Permission.
Re‑instrumented in a darker string arrangement tailored to the acoustics of the space and the gradual darkening that follows the sunset, performed by musicians from Aarhus Symphony Orchestra.
Share your lullaby – call +45 87152507
The sound work will be performed as part of the special Sunset Sessions in As Seen Below, where James Turrell’s luminous universe amplifies and refines the sky’s shifting colours as day transitions into night.
For this reason, the sound work’s second act Liminality is shaped by the lullabies and goodnight songs we carry with us from childhood.
“We would love people to share the lullabies they were sung to sleep with. For me, these melodies and words sit deep in the body’s memory. They hold a sense of comfort, but also of vulnerability and surrender to the dark and the unknown,” says Marie Koldkjær Højlund.
You can contribute by calling the voicemail at +45 87152507 and singing—or speaking—the lullaby that holds meaning for you. James Turrell has also contributed a personal lullaby, which will be included in the work.
