ARoS receives DKK 2 million from the Augustinus Foundation for its work on the museum's green transition

The Augustinus Foundation has awarded ARoS DKK 2 million for the two-year project The Art of Transition, which aims to push the museum in an even more sustainable direction. The money will be used, among other things, to develop a sustainability strategy and make concrete changes that will reduce the museum's carbon footprint.

With this project, ARoS aims to create a foundation for working more strategically, systematically and long-term with the museum's sustainability efforts. The project is divided into two parallel tracks: one aimed at developing a strategy for the green transition at ARoS and one focused on testing and implementing concrete initiatives and providing further training in sustainability for the museum's employees so that they can contribute to the green transition in a qualified manner.

Specifically, the project will focus on incorporating circular principles into the museum's exhibitions so that waste is reduced and materials used in exhibition construction are reused and recycled as much as possible. In addition, the project aims to reduce the carbon footprint of the ARoS Shop, Café and Restaurant, as well as in building operations, which includes working with climate management in ARoS' galleries.

"In ARoS' vision for 2033, we are committed to reducing our CO2 emissions. Sustainability is a key focus area for ARoS, and through targeted efforts across the organisation, investments in technologies that support the green transition, and conscious behavioural changes among our employees, we will work to set a good example in the industry in this particular field," says museum director Rebecca Matthews.

ARoS has been working to reduce the museum's impact on the environment and climate in recent years and has already implemented and fulfilled a number of initiatives:

  • Green Attraction certification in 2023
  • Joining the Danish Museums' charter for the green transition of Danish museums
  • Participation in the research project ‘Getting Climate Control under Control’
  • Preparation of climate accounts for the museum's direct emissions for 2023 and for the museum's direct and indirect emissions for 2024
  • Strategic work to reduce the museum's energy consumption and the amount of residual waste
  • 73% reduction in red meat purchases from 2022 to 2024
  • Establishment of an environmental group to drive the museum's green transition based on targets approved by the ARoS board

The Art of Transition project is in line with the museum's Vision 2033, which has sustainability as one of its eight strategic pillars. As part of this vision, ARoS wants to inspire visitors as well as other museums and cultural institutions to take sustainable action and work together with local, regional, national and international partners to take better care of our shared planet.

To lead the project, ARoS will hire a sustainability partner in autumn 2025, who will work closely with the museum's departments and the consulting firm Nordic Sustainability, which is assisting ARoS in its green transition.
