I have always cherished contemplating the works of Danish modernist painters such as J.F. Willumsen, Erik Hoppe and Harald Giersing. I like the way in which they playfully challenge perspective and space. I have always felt connected to the works of Giersing, especially to his Cubist expressions such as Lady with Needlework (1919).
The subject is tranquil; the young lady is withdrawn and offers little interaction. Perhaps she is introvert or just busy sewing, but the coarse, Cézanne-like brushstrokes quite undeniably add emotion to her figure and the undefined space she occupies.
